Job description

The Department of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics at Wright State University is seeking to hire a Lecturer in Philosophy. WSU, located in Dayton, Ohio, is a comprehensive regional state university enrolling approximately 13,000 students across 10 colleges and schools. The department offers BA’s in Philosophy, Religion, and Classics, as well as minors in each field. Its faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, student success, and interdisciplinary cooperation.

 This position is designed to serve students not only in the College of Liberal Arts but also in the College of Engineering and Computer Science and other professional fields. Accordingly, we seek candidates with an area of specialization in applied ethics, specifically professional ethics and engineering ethics. The area of competence is more flexible, but preference will be given to candidates with competence in Metaphysics and Epistemology, including Philosophy of Mind. Introduction to Logic (Critical Thinking) is also desirable.

 The appointment will be for 3 years, with the possibility of renewal, and the possibility of continuous contract after 7 years. The initial teaching load will be 8 courses over 2 semesters (4-4), with a possible reduction to 7 courses in subsequent years. The faculty will be expected to teach 2-3 sections of “Ethics for Professional Responsibility” each semester, with the remainder of the load being in the faculty’s area(s) of competence. Departmental and University service also expected. Summer teaching for additional compensation may be available during compressed six-week summer sessions.

 Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Philosophy or related field by first start date

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior college-level teaching experience
  • Commitment to undergraduate student success
