Job description

Xavier University, a nationally ranked, liberal arts, Jesuit Catholic institution in Cincinnati, Ohio, invites applications for Director of the Edward B. Brueggeman Center for Dialogue.

Xavier University is part of the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts and is strongly committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. These values are central to our mission (https://www.xavier.edu/mission-identity/trustees/xavier-university/xavier-university-mission-and-vision-statements). We strive for a climate of respect and inclusiveness that welcomes and supports members from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, is committed unreservedly to open and free inquiry, and deliberately seeks out multiple perspectives.

The Center’s mission statement, “Working collaboratively for a more just, sustainable and equitable world,” dovetails with the University’s commitment to provide a rigorous education dedicated to high academic standards, diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

The current programming of the Center is cross-disciplinary and falls into the following categories, with interfaith dialogue and collaboration key:

  • Interfaith Dialogue and Collaboration
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Globalization and Internationalization
  • Refugee and Asylee Work
  • Political and Economic Justice

Details of the current work in which the Center is involved are available at xavier.edu/dialogue.

Because of the Center’s extensive network of internal and external partnerships and its many ongoing activities, the Director will initially work collaboratively with the outgoing Executive and Founding Director in promoting the Center’s mission. However, the Director will be encouraged to freely develop her/his own vision for the future of the Center.

If desired and with appropriate qualifications, the Director may request a faculty appointment, though such appointment will require the review and approval of the relevant academic department and conform to the guidelines of Xavier University’s Faculty Handbook.

The preferred start date is June 1, 2020, but the actual start date is negotiable.

A successful candidate for this position will:

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and students from all four of Xavier’s colleges over a wide range of academic disciplines to develop and implement programs.
  • Work directly with community organizations, including faith communities, nonprofit organizations, governmental organizations, and the business community to develop programming that deepens Xavier’s engagement with the regional community.
  • Work globally, providing a “portal” for Xavier to bring international scholars and experts to the University. To date, the Center has brought scholars, experts, NGO leaders and government officials from over 90 countries to Xavier.
  • Manage the Winter-Cohen Brueggeman Research Fellows, a unique program in which seven to 10 students are chosen to conduct a year of independent research in the Center with funding to travel abroad for two to six months to continue that research. To date, students have completed combinations of research and service in over 60 different countries. The Director is expected to assist interested Fellows in completing applications for additional research opportunities, such as the Fulbright Program.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Required:
    • Terminal degree in one of the disciplines represented at Xavier University (PhD or JD preferred).
    • At least five years of experience in higher education.
    • Proven ability to work effectively with students in teaching and in directing independent research.
    • Basic understanding of the role of religion in contemporary society
  • Preferred:
    • Experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of university departments, programs and centers.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of community organizations on the design and implementation of programming.
    • Experience working collaboratively with local, national and international partners to develop programs that deal with global issues.
    • Budgetary and fundraising experience. While the Center has its own endowment, it is necessary to be able to secure funding and manage budgets for the Center.
