Postdoctoral Scholar, Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Scholar position in Philosophy beginning August 2020. The Scholar position is funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to enhance and expand our existing diversity efforts as they relate to underrepresented students, including African-Americans, Latino/as, Native Americans, and others who have a demonstrated commitment to diversity in the academy. AOS/AOC: Critical philosophy of race, Africana or African-American philosophy, Latin American or Latino/a philosophy, or Native American or indigenous philosophy. We especially encourage applicants from underrepresented groups in philosophy. During their residency, the Scholar will have no teaching responsibilities, though they may request a teaching assignment. The successful applicant is expected to be in residence and to take an active part in the life of the department. The successful applicant must also have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by the time of appointment, but within the previous five academic years. Salary/benefit package is competitive and will include a moving allowance and a research budget as well as funding for a dissertation/book manuscript review session. Review of applications will begin on January 13, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled. To be considered for this position, applications must be submitted electronically at http://psu.jobs. Include (1) a formal letter of application detailing relevant qualifications for this position, (2) a research statement, (3) a current curriculum vitae, (4) a relevant writing sample, and (5) three (3) confidential letters of recommendation. Confidential letters of recommendation should be sent directly to Sarah Dugan at mailto:sbd5122@psu.edu. In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity. Penn State is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusion that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engage all individuals to help them thrive. We value inclusion as a core strength and an essential element of our public service mission.
