Job description |
Georgetown University in Washington D.C. has an opening, contingent on funding, for a new 1-2 year faculty position. Based on the applicant's interest, the position can be shaped as a 1-year Visiting Faculty position or a 2-year term position, for Ethics Lab, an initiative of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics that brings philosophy and design thinking together to help make progress on some of the most morally challenging issues of the day. A PhD in philosophy is required by the time of appointment, with an AOS in ethics (normative or applied) or political philosophy. An AOC in the ethics of emerging technologies is an advantage, but not required. A strong record of teaching is essential for this position, as is a demonstrated ability to pursue collaborative work and manage projects. Demonstrated publication record is an advantage, as is demonstrated record of prior interdisciplinary or public impact work. This is an opportunity to embed with a team developing innovative modes of ethics education, and working with research, policy, and industry teams working to find ethical pathways in cutting edge contexts of emerging digital technologies, bioethics, and divided democracy. Candidates should be philosophically rigorous, but also creative and interested in doing work that reaches beyond the university’s walls. Candidates should be comfortable working in a collaborative team environment and practicing philosophy in contexts of innovation, ambiguity, and complexity; have strong interpersonal skills; be able to work productively with colleagues and partners from outside of philosophy; and be able to effectively manage multiple projects. Robust onboarding to the team, its mission, and its methods will be provided. This position will co-develop and teach the equivalent of one Ethics Lab course each semester; participate in further developing Ethics Lab’s methodology of “translational ethics”; help lead coordination and delivery of embedded ethics workshops with partner courses across campus; lead selected direct impact projects between the Ethics Lab team and external partners in a rich collaborative environment; and help supervise the day to day activities of the Ethics Lab postdocs. The Senior Ethicist will also have 25% protected time for their own research. The Senior Ethicist position is a 12-month appointment, with a start date of August 17, 2020, and carries a highly competitive salary. We will also consider opportunities for shared salaries for faculty wishing to take a year long leave from their primary institution. For benefit information, see link. The Ethics Lab Senior Ethicist will be supervised by Prof. Margaret Little, Professor of Philosophy and Director of Ethics Lab. Candidates should email their CV, a cover letter, research statement, teaching portfolio, and three letters of reference to [email protected] This position is offered contingent on funding for AY20-21 About Ethics Lab: Georgetown’s Ethics Lab is a unique team of philosophers and designers using new methods to tackle a morally complex world.
