Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Wesleyan University invites applications for a one-year non-tenure-track position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy beginning September 1, 2020. AOS/AOC in philosophy of science, metaphysics, or epistemology.  Ph.D. in Philosophy in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as a Visiting Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as a Visiting Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in Philosophy in hand at the time of appointment. Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college that values both scholarship and teaching very highly, and has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body.

The teaching load for visiting faculty at Wesleyan is 3/2, and will include two first-year seminars in the fall semester, one of which may be a team-taught course originating in the College of Letters, an interdisciplinary program in philosophy, history, and literature.  The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.

Courses will be chosen to reflect the successful candidate’s teaching strengths, but we have particular needs in any of the following areas: philosophy of science (including science-in-practice, science and values, and/or philosophies of particular sciences), epistemology, philosophy of language, logic, and metaphysics.  No advising duties, but possibility of directing undergraduate theses in the candidate’s AOS/AOC.

Applications completed by February 15 will receive full consideration. Please contact Lynn Higgs at [email protected] if you have questions about the application process.

To apply, visit http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/7196. A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample, statement of current research, and documentation of teaching experience, including teaching statement, course syllabi and student evaluations. As part of the teaching statement (or cover letter), we invite you to describe your cultural competencies and experiences engaging a diverse student body. You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation. Applications should be submitted online at http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/7196.
