Job description

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts at Colorado State University invites applications for a tenured/tenurable associate or full professor. Primary teaching and research responsibilities will be within the Department of Philosophy. The standard teaching load for tenured and tenure-track faculty is a 2/2. The position is the inaugural Willette Endowed Professor. This position will support campus interdisciplinary efforts in Religious Studies.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Philosophy, Religion, Theology or related discipline with doctoral work within the Catholic intellectual tradition;
  • Demonstrated evidence of nationally-recognized scholarship;
  • Promise of excellence in engaged scholarship;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • Demonstrated experience in course design.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence and enthusiasm for designing and offering courses that engage students in understanding of Catholic philosophical traditions;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the graduate and undergraduate levels;
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to engaged scholarship through research, teaching and outreach programs,
  • Ability to model the exploration and discussion of religion-society issues publicly in a rigorous, interfaith, mutually beneficial way.
  • Demonstrated leadership in working with other faculty to support interdisciplinary courses, curriculum, goals and activities
  • Ability to advance the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • AOC that complements existing departmental strengths.

Effective starting date is August 16, 2020. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.  The successful candidate’s workload percentages will be negotiated at hire, depending on plans for community engagement, research, and teaching.

The Department includes approximately 135 undergraduate majors and minors in Philosophy and 13-15 Masters students in the terminal M.A. degree program. With faculty from a wide variety of areas in philosophy, predominantly working in the analytic tradition, the department has particular strengths in applied ethics and global philosophies.  The department has historically supported a broad and inclusive approach to philosophy.  Its three undergraduate concentrations include one in Global Philosophies and Religions, and it currently has scholars working in areas such as Islamic philosophy and Buddhist philosophy.

Colorado State University has an enrollment of approximately 34,000 residential students, including 4,000 graduate students. It is a Carnegie I Research-Extensive University and is recognized as one of the premier institutions of higher education in the western United States. The Department of Philosophy is housed in the College of Liberal Arts, which enjoys among the largest college enrollments and faculty numbers at the university.

Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, a growing community of about 165,000 people.  It sits at the foot of Colorado's Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and on the scenic Cache La Poudre River.  It is located about 60 miles from Rocky Mountain National Park. Denver is also located about an hour's drive away.  Ft. Collins has its own symphony, cultural center, ballet and theater companies, and a beautifully restored downtown restaurant and entertainment district.  Industries in the area include Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Teledyne-Waterpik, Kodak and Anheuser Busch.
