Job description

The Northeastern University Ethics Institute and Department of Philosophy and Religion seek to hire an Associate Director for the Institute. The Associate Director will work closely with the Institute Director. They will help to manage Ethics Institute programs, collaborate on funded research projects, and contribute to strategic planning, project development, grant/proposal writing, and outreach. The Associate Director will also teach two courses a year in applied ethics (e.g. technology ethics, biomedical ethics, environmental ethics) in the Department of Philosophy and Religion.

Northeastern University’s Ethics Institute is located within the Philosophy and Religion Department in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Institute is home to a diverse array of research, curricular, co-curricular, and outreach programs. The Institute’s mission is to bring ethical analysis and evaluation to bear on social and environmental issues, as well as conduct original research in the areas of applied ethics, ethical theory, social and political philosophy, and religious ethics. Although located within Northeastern’s Philosophy and Religion Department, the Institute collaborates widely across the University, including with law, computer science, engineering, network science, biology, journalism, business, and political science. The Institute also supports ethics-oriented programming, education, and research throughout Northeastern University’s global campus network.

The Associate Director will contribute to all aspects of the Ethics Institute’s mission: research, education, and outreach. In the area of research, the Associate Director will: help to develop and write research proposals; coordinate ongoing research projects by organizing research meetings and supervising undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral researchers; and conduct original research as part of Institute projects. In the area of education, the Associate Director will: teach courses in applied ethics; help to develop curriculum for ethics education for programs around the university; deliver ethics education and trainings around the University. In the area of outreach, the Associate Director will: represent the Ethics Institute at public-facing events; contribute to developing and writing public-facing reports; and help to raise awareness of the Ethics Institute’s work through professional organizations, conferences, the media and online.

This is a permanent, full benefits, administrative position. Although not a faculty position, the Associate Director will be welcomed into all aspects of the Department of Philosophy and Religion’s dynamic and collaborative ethics and philosophy community. 

Qualifications

-       Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related field

-       Experience teaching applied ethics

-       Excellent skills in professional writing and oral communication

-       Excellent research skills in philosophical approaches to ethics

-       Commitment to fostering inclusive, collaborative, and collegial environments

-       Ability to collaborate productively with diverse groups

-       Organization abilities to sustain multiple projects

-       Ability to travel as needed

-       Experience with, or strong appetite for, grant writing, project management (including personnel supervision), and experiential learning
