Job description

Morehead State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of History, Philosophy, Religion and Legal Studies. The Chair provides academic and administrative leadership for the department and its programs and promotes excellence in teaching, advising, creative endeavor, scholarship and service to the University and to the profession. The Chair supports the mission and goals of the University and works with other stakeholders to implement the University's strategic plan. The Chair reports to the Dean of the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and oversees academic programs served by 13 tenured/tenure-track faculty, one fixed-term instructor, five part-time lecturers, and one support staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead the department and represent the unit within the University and community. Develop, update, implement, and coordinate teaching, research, and service missions of the unit. Administer budgets, personnel, and programs. Coordinate and conduct faculty evaluations and make recommendations. Oversee development, implementation, maintenance and assessment of academic programs, including general education and distance education programming. Lead and oversee curriculum development and revision, and ensure compliance with applicable accreditation and state standards. Coordinate faculty workloads and develop course schedules. Oversee student advising, fellowships, internships, scholarships, grant programs, facilities, and equipment. Develop and maintain outreach initiatives, including the fostering of relationships with alumni and external stakeholders. Participate in fund-raising and other cultivation initiatives and work to identify resources for new and existing programs. Some teaching expected; normal teaching load is two courses per semester. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Chair of the Department of History, Philosophy, Religion and Legal Studies is expected to be a vigorous and collaborative leader with the ability to build the quality and stature of programs. The chair must be able to lead the recruitment of high-quality faculty and students, communicate effectively with the wider community and articulate a clear and consistent vision for the continued development of the unit. S/he is expected to build consensus, practice shared governance, and value diversity and inclusion.

The successful candidate is expected to have credentials consistent with the attainment of tenure at the rank of full professor in at least one field or specialization represented in the department, including the doctoral degree in a relevant field and faculty rank as a tenured full professor or qualifications for such rank within the department. We are seeking candidates that have demonstrated a significant record of success in college-level academic administration related to the responsibilities of the position. The selection process will focus on candidates who can effectively represent the department within and outside of the University, demonstrate sensitivity to and support for a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, are skilled in promoting productive partnerships and collaborations, and have the requisite disposition and ability to enhance the quality, expand the reputation and enlarge the enrollment of the department and its programs. Evidence of teaching excellence, on-going and significant record of publication and research, national stature in the profession, and capacity to be a role model and mentor for colleagues in a multi-discipline department is expected.

APPOINTMENT: Professor. Full-time, 12-month appointment, effective July 1, 2013. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
