Job description

Candidates must either have, or be willing to acquire, the ability to teach in other areas outside their specialization, and should draw attention to the full range of their teaching abilities.

Candidates will be expected to be engaged in high-level research, to publish in their specialist field, to seek opportunities to win external funding for their research, to teach and examine undergraduates, and to supervise and examine MPhil and PhD postgraduate work.

It is expected that candidates will have a PhD in Philosophy (or relevant area) by the time of the application deadline. Candidates will have an outstanding record of excellence in research, publication and teaching in Philosophy, bearing in mind their stage of career.

The Lectureships are based in the Faculty of Philosophy, in central Cambridge. The positions are permanent, subject to the satisfactory completion of a review of the initial probationary period of office. This review is intended to be a constructive one, is non-competitive, and most post-holders at Cambridge complete it satisfactorily.

Most academic staff are also invited to join a College as a Fellow. College teaching is remunerated separately from the University teaching, and appointment to a College is a separate matter from a University appointment. Membership of a College adds an important social and intellectual dimension for many academic staff.

In order for applications to be considered applicants must upload:

  • a covering letter
  • a curriculum vitae, which includes a list of publications and areas of teaching competence
  • a statement of research interests and future research plans;
  • two samples of recent work (not exceeding 20,000 words in total)

The closing date is midnight (GMT) on Tuesday 15th December 2020. Candidates are required to give contact details for three referees. We shall request references at the long-listing stage. Full details about the interviews and final selection process will be sent to short-listed candidates.

Enquiries about the appointments procedure and related matters may be made to Ms. Heather Sanderson, Faculty Administrator and Secretary to the Selection Committee, at [email protected]. Enquiries about academic matters may be made to Prof. Rae Langton, Chair of Faculty, at [email protected].
