Job description

The University of Rochester invites applications for a Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowship in conjunction with its 2021-22 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar, Unbordering Migration in the Americas:  Causes, Experiences, Identities.  The Fellowship carries a nine-month appointment beginning September 1, 2021 and a stipend of $60K, plus benefits.  Applicants must have received a Ph.D. no earlier than 2016.  Applicants may be ABD if they will receive a Ph.D. by July 1, 2021.

We seek scholars in the humanities or humanistic social sciences whose research engages with any aspect of human migration in the Americas, past or present. The ethical dimensions and policy implications of migration are of prime importance to the work of the seminar. Planned activities—presentations and workshops on quantitative and qualitative studies; film screenings; an art exhibit; and connection with local communities—suggest the breadth of approaches that applicants may adopt.

The fellow will be affiliated with University’s Humanities Center and will be required to be in residence for the 2021-2022 academic year, contingent on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rules of the University’s School of Arts and Sciences.  The fellow is expected to be an active participant in all aspects of the seminar. Primary responsibilities will be to conduct original research on a topic related to the seminar theme; to attend and participate in the bimonthly seminar meetings and other activities; to lead a monthly working group for graduate students and interested faculty members; and to assist as needed with the coordination of events.

Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their interest in and qualifications to address migration in the Americas; a plan of research for the fellowship period; a CV; a writing sample (approximately 20 pages); and two letters of recommendation.  All materials must be submitted online.  For more information about the University of Rochester Sawyer Seminar, and to apply, go to https://www.sas.rochester.edu/humanities/programs/sawyer-seminar.html.

The deadline for applications is January 15, 2021.
