Job description

Concordia University in Montreal, Canada is inviting applications for postdoctoral fellowships in the philosophy of logic valued at $50,000 (Canadian) per year (plus benefits) for each of two years. The position does not include any teaching duties. The position is open to candidates who earned a PhD in philosophy or logic in the last five years and meet the eligibility requirements below. Skills in mathematics and computer science are assets.

PROJECT:  We looking for postdoctoral fellow to join our team for a project on the role or nature of logic, with a focus on inferentialist views and so-called “logical expressivism.” The title of the project is “Logical Expressivism: Material Consequence as the Foundation of Logic.” The principal investigator is Ulf Hlobil; collaborators are: Eduardo Barrio, Robert Brandom, Jaroslav Peregrin, and Lucas Rosenblatt. We will investigate the implications of different philosophical conceptions of logic for various non-classical logics, especially substructural logics, including non-monotonic and non-transitive logics. This will require familiarity with sequent calculi and semantics for substructural logics. We will implement computer simulations of the use of different logics in dialogues and in the analysis of natural-language arguments. The position will involve some light administrative and organizational tasks related to the project.

GENERAL:  Concordia University is a vibrant research and teaching environment, with state-of-the-art research facilities and many research centers. Concordia is located in Montreal, Canada, a diverse and creative city, often ranked as offering one of the best quality of living experiences in North America.

Applicants should be fluent in English; French is not required. Concordia University is committed to employment equity and welcomes applications from underrepresented groups, such as women, visible minorities, aboriginal people and persons with disabilities.

(ii) Priority will be given to postdoctoral fellows who have obtained their PhD from another university although in exceptional cases Concordia graduates may be considered.

(iii) Applicants must adhere to the postdoctoral fellow eligibility criteria outlined in Concordia University’s Postdoctoral Policy.
