Lecturer Pool - Department of Rhetoric - UC Berkeley

The Department of Rhetoric is a leading center for interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences, committed to the study of rhetorical traditions from the classical to the contemporary eras.

The department invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate courses, should a need arise, in any of the following possible areas: Environmental Humanities; Gender and Sexuality; Rhetoric of Visual Culture, Media and/or Literature; Critical Theory; Rhetoric of Law; Rhetoric of Religion; Politics and Rhetoric of Political Theory; Reading and Composition.

Due to Covid-19, courses taught during the spring semester will be taught remotely. During the summer and fall of 2021, courses may be taught remotely, in-person, or via a hybrid model, as required by county and state public health guidelines. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.

The pool will remain in place for one calendar year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Positions will be part-time (typically 33% or 40% per course), renewable, non-tenure- track beginning as early as summer 2021. The number of positions will vary from semester to semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding and performance. Typically, the department reviews applications for fall teaching in March and April, applications for spring teaching in October and November, and applications for summer teaching in November and December.

General duties: in addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g.., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web-based course resources.

Minimal qualification (required at the time of the application):

• PhD, JD, or equivalent international degree, or enrolled in a PhD, JD, or equivalent international degree program

Additional qualifications (required by the employment start date):

• Completed Ph.D., JD, or equivalent international degree
• For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD, JD, or equivalent degree, in the humanities or humanistic social sciences, with emphasis on interdisciplinary and theoretical approaches.
• Experience teaching at the college level in the U.S.
• If hired to teach Reading & Composition, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English.
• Potential for successful advising and mentoring of students.
• Potential for program coordination and curriculum development.

Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. (The starting 100% full-time annual gross salary rate is currently $56,381)
