Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks to hire a non-tenure earning (NTE) assistant professor (AOS: Applied Ethics, including Bioethics; AOC: Open). We are particularly interested in hiring a philosopher who is especially competent and well-qualified to teach multiple sections of bioethics on a regular basis. The teaching load is seven courses a year over two semesters. The appointment will initially be for one year, and subject to budgets, enrollments, and good evaluations of teaching, will be renewable for longer contracts. While it is non-tenure earning, this is not a visiting position and it comes with the possibility of promotion after the appropriate years of high-quality service. Completion of a Ph.D. in philosophy is required prior to start of appointment.

The Department of Philosophy at UAB supports an undergraduate major and also serves the core curriculum. Current faculty research is in core areas of analytic philosophy with traditional strengths in ethics, epistemology, and philosophy of science. Please visit the department website at www.uab.edu/cas/philosophy for more information.

With over 22,000 students and 2,200 full-time faculty members, UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in the state. Interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching is prominent, and the Department of Philosophy collaborates closely with multiple units across campus. UAB ranks in the top ten nationally for student diversity, and Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, offering a vibrant cultural community with a wide array of recreational opportunities.

Applications must include a cover letter, CV, graduate transcripts (which need not be official), teaching statement, evidence of teaching excellence (such as peer and student evaluations), diversity statement, and at least three confidential letters of recommendation. Applicants may also include a research statement and a teaching portfolio with course syllabi. Complete application materials must be received by March 1, 2021. We encourage applications from women and those belonging to other historically disadvantaged groups. Application materials should be submitted via https://uab.peopleadmin.com/postings/8263

Candidates who are shortlisted should be available for remote interview in late March.  Questions may be directed to Dr. Kevin McCain ([email protected]), Chair of the Search Committee.

UAB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and family-friendly environment in which all faculty and staff can excel and achieve work/life balance irrespective of, race, national origin, age, genetic or family medical history, gender, faith, gender identity and expression as well as sexual orientation. UAB also encourages applications from individuals with disabilities and veterans.

A pre-employment background check investigation is performed on candidates selected for employment.
