Job description

The College of St. Scholastica Philosophy Department invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2021 at the rank of Assistant Professor. Area of specialization is ethics/value theory broadly construed; areas of competence should include management/business ethics. Our department particularly welcomes applicants who, in addition to competence in management/business ethics, have interest working with interdisciplinary programs and who have expertise in any of the following areas: philosophy of medicine, political philosophy, philosophy of race, philosophy of disability, post-Kantian history of philosophy, or philosophy of law. Our department values diversity among its faculty, including religious diversity, and strongly encourages applications from those historically under-represented in the field. Applications received by March 5th will receive full consideration.

Our department is small and pluralistic, interested in an applicant who could help grow our major and teach a variety of courses (including undergraduate and possibly graduate-level courses in business ethics) while advancing their own research agenda and contributing to our department’s initiatives. Currently, these initiatives include creating a track in ethics and possibly an Ethics Bowl team, working with the School of Business and Technology to re-vamp their undergraduate and graduate-level business ethics courses, and positioning the Philosophy program as an excellent pre-law major. The teaching load is 3/3 with standard non-teaching service and research expectations.

A completed Ph.D. in Philosophy, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education are required.

The College of St. Scholastica is a thriving independent private college with its main campus overlooking Lake Superior in Duluth, extended campuses throughout Minnesota and vibrant online programs that attract learners from around the world. Since 1912, The College of St. Scholastica (CSS) has been preparing students for responsible living and meaningful work by emphasizing the Catholic Benedictine values upon which it was founded:  Community, Hospitality, Respect, Stewardship and Love of Learning. At CSS, equity and inclusion are viewed as key ingredients to academic excellence and student success.

The College serves an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs throughout six schools— nursing, arts and letters, business and technology, education, health sciences, and sciences. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks CSS among the best colleges and universities in the region for academic excellence and in 2018 Money magazine included St. Scholastica as a top “best colleges for your money” based on educational quality, affordability and alumni earnings.
