Description

The Roger Mudd Center for Ethics seeks candidates for the 2021-2023 Mudd Center for Ethics Postdoctoral Fellowship. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to teach three undergraduate courses during the year, typically including a 100-level course in the fall, an upper-division course in the winter, and a third course in the fall, winter, or spring (chosen in consultation with the Director).  In addition, the Mudd Ethics Fellow will be expected to participate actively in Mudd Center activities and event planning, to interact with and advise undergraduates affiliated with the Mudd Center, and to help foster an interdisciplinary ethics community across the College of Liberal Arts, the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, and the School of Law. The appointment will be for two years, beginning on July 1, 2021 and ending on June 30, 2023.

Washington and Lee, a private, liberal arts university with approximately 2200 students, is in Lexington, Virginia, a town of approximately 7000 people in the Valley of Virginia. One of the nation’s top liberal arts institutions, W&L is unique in having accredited programs in business administration, journalism, and accounting, as well as a School of Law.  Established in 1749, it is the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the nation.  The Roger Mudd Center for Ethics was established in 2010 through a gift from esteemed journalist and W&L alumnus Roger Mudd. Its mission is to advance dialogue, teaching, and research about important ethical issues in public and professional life.  To learn more, please visit https://www.wlu.edu/mudd-center.

Washington and Lee University promotes a dynamic and inclusive environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in teaching and for vigorous scholarship. In keeping with the University Strategic Plan, we welcome applications from underrepresented minority candidates and members of other communities that are traditionally underrepresented in academia.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a focus on ethical issues arising in public or professional life.  The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. with a focus on ethics and will have completed his or her Ph.D. by June of 2021. The candidate must be no more than three years from the awarding of his or her degree (i.e., June of 2018), although exceptions to this rule may be made in unusual circumstances.
