Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee / Knoxville invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Teaching Associate. The postdoctoral associate will, in addition to teaching a 2/2 course load, participate in research projects in the Philosophy of the Social Sciences, requiring some familiarity with formal Sociological methods, e.g. network modelling, under the supervision of Prof Mariam Thalos, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Head of Department.  Candidates  with Feminist and Critical Race research orientations welcome.

In addition to participating in research projects in Phil of the Social Sciences, the postdoctoral associate is expected to:

  • assist with grant-writing initiatives out of the Philosophy department, under the guidance of Prof Thalos;
  • take a leading role in organizing a workshop in the area of research and/or colloquia of interest to the department;
  • teach two 25-person (or less) courses in the department of Philosophy each semester, which may include a graduate student seminar in an area of specialization;
  • actively participate in the life of the Department by attending events, engaging faculty and graduate students, and–as desired--giving presentation of their work in progress and informally mentoring doctoral students affiliated with the department.

The term of appointment is 1 August 2021 to 31 July 2022, and the salary will be $50,000.

Applicants for the position should have completed a PhD in Philosophy of Science, preferably with focus on the Philosophy of the Social Sciences, by the position start date.   4. A research project proposal of 1,500-3,000 words, which the applicant aims to complete or substantially advance over their year at UTK.
