About the position: Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (INN), The PhD programme Innovation in Services - Public and Private (INSEPP), invites candidates to apply for a 3-year PhD research fellowship in innovation studies with a focus on innovation in scientific publishing. Innovation studies is an interdisciplinary field, and candidates with a master’s degree in any relevant discipline will be considered. The purpose of the PhD research fellowship for the admitted candidate is to undergo a research training programme that leads to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The selected applicant will be expected to complete the PhD programme in 2024. In recent decades, scientific publishing has undergone dramatic changes. It has become almost fully digitized, and the function of publishers has shifted from distribution, typesetting and so on, to allocation of prestige. The volume of published research has vastly increased, as has the number of researchers. The increasing pressure to “publish or perish” may lead to an overall decrease in quality, problems for researchers in keeping up with their field, and perhaps also an increase in the frequency of fraud. The traditional financial model, where university libraries “buy back” research funded by the same institutions (often from highly profitable private publishers), has come under fire, and alternative open access models have emerged. The open access model, however, has spurred predatory journals that exploit its “pay-to-publish” funding system, and one might question whether this funding system lowers the standards of acceptance even for legitimate journals and publishers. And, private publishers are still making large profits from publicly funded research. The traditional peerreview model has also come under pressure - questions have been raised about its efficiency, fairness and reliability. But with these challenges also come great opportunities for innovation. This project aims to study the drivers, structure and products of innovation in scientific publishing. We invite applications from candidates who wish to work on any aspect of this topic. Candidates are invited to submit their own research proposals. Possible research topics include, but are not limited to: The candidate may have a background from any field relevant to their research project (including but not limited to Library Studies, Computer Science, Data Science, STS, or Philosophy).
The candidate will be supervised by philosophers at INN, but can also draw on expertise from a wider pool of researchers inside and outside the institution. The research proposal may (but need not) name potential external co-supervisors. Qualifications and personal skills
