Job description

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. AOS: Moral, Political, or Legal Philosophy; AOC: Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). The holder of this position will be a core faculty member in our growing undergraduate program in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law (PPEL), and is expected to have research and teaching interests at the intersection of philosophy, politics, economics, and law. Successful candidate will have opportunities to advise pre-law students.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to: i) teach the core courses in PPEL (see http://bgsu.edu/ppel); ii) teach graduate seminars and advise graduate students in Bowling Green’s unique program in Applied Philosophy (see https://www.bgsu.edu/arts-and-sciences/philosophy/graduate-program.html); iii) teach the PPEL capstone course, which includes directing advanced undergraduates as they develop and complete high quality and compelling interdisciplinary research projects; iv) develop and maintain a productive research program that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters in edited volumes, or scholarly books.

The minimum qualifications for the position are: i) a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Philosophy, or in Political Science or Economics with a background in philosophy as demonstrated by research in or graduate courses taken in Philosophy (ABDs are eligible to apply but must complete the requirements for the doctoral degree prior to beginning of employment (August 2021); ii) expertise in at least one area of legal philosophy or public policy, as demonstrated by having taken at least two graduate courses, teaching experience in at least one course, or dissertation or other research in those areas; iii) evidence of active research in an area of PPE (publications or writing sample); iv) capacity to teach PPE courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as demonstrated by research or graduate course work in PPE, experience teaching PPE, or a sample syllabus for a PPE course. In your letter of application, clearly explain how you meet these qualifications, and include in your application the documents necessary to demonstrate that you do.
