Job description

Georgetown University in Washington D.C. invites applications for a 1-2 year postdoctoral position for Ethics Lab, an initiative of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. Ethics Lab brings philosophy and design thinking together to develop novel courses; design and deliver creative exercises for embedding ethics across the curriculum; and provide ethics-centered consultation and facilitation to research, policy, and industry teams.

This postdoc will focus on the Lab’s efforts in ethics in data and digital technologies. The postdoc will lead one Ethics Lab course the first year (increasing to two courses the second year if the position is renewed); help coordinate, design, and deliver embedded ethics workshops with our Computer Science partners; and participate in selected direct impact projects between the Ethics Lab team and external partners focusing on tech ethics. The postdoc will also have 20% protected time for their own research.

A PhD in philosophy is required by the time of appointment, with an AOS in ethics (normative or applied) or political philosophy. An AOC in the ethics of emerging technologies or prior experience in the tech world are particular advantages but not required.

Candidates should be philosophically rigorous but also creative, enthusiastic about working with other disciplines, and interested in doing work that reaches beyond the university’s walls. Candidates should be comfortable working in a collaborative team environment and practicing philosophy in contexts of innovation, ambiguity, and complexity; have strong interpersonal skills; and be able to effectively manage multiple projects. Robust onboarding to the team, its mission, and its methods will be provided. For more on Ethics Lab, please visit the website.

The postdoc position is a 12-month appointment with a start date no later than August 9, 2021, and carries a highly competitive salary. For benefit information, see link. The Ethics Lab postdoc will be supervised by Prof. Margaret Little, Professor of Philosophy and Director of Ethics Lab.

Georgetown University is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer fully dedicated to achieving a diverse faculty and staff. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, national origin, marital status, veteran status, disability or other categories protected by law.
