Job description

The department of philosophy of the VU Amsterdam has a vacancy for an assistant professor (tenure-track) of public health ethics. Teaching will be in the MA programme “Philosophy, Bioethics, and Health” (PBH) as well as in the BA programme “Philosophy, Politics and Economics” (PPE) of the VU’s John Stuart Mill College, and the BA/MA Philosophy programmes. We are looking for candidates who will contribute to the further development of the philosophy department’s interdisciplinary focus. Given the profile of the research group and teaching in the PPE programme, candidates with expertise in the philosophy and ethics of policy and/or economics are encouraged to apply.

Your duties

  • conduct research that contributes to the international developments in the field
  • attract external research funding
  • teach courses in bioethics in the interdisciplinary PBH programme and in moral and political philosophy for students in the PPE (undergraduate) and Philosophy (undergraduate and graduate) programmes
  • participate in the research activities of the ethics group of the Department of Philosophy and John Stuart Mill College

REQUIREMENTS

  • a PhD in philosophy and a track record in public health ethics
  • strong teaching skills
  • a relevant international network
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO) or willingness to obtain such a qualification within the first two years of the appointment
  • mastery of English at CEFR C1/C2 level

WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?

We offer a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor initially for the duration of 5 years. During the tenure track, you devote 30% of your working hours to research, 60% to teaching and 10% to management. Tenure can be achieved if the faculty criteria for Assistant Professor are fulfilled. For the duration of the tenure track, performance will be evaluated in terms of teaching, publication record, attempts to acquire research funding either individually or in consortia, academic service and valorisation. After a successful evaluation, permanent employment will be granted.

On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of
€3,746 (scale 11) and a maximum of €5.127 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 1 FTE.
