Endowed Willette Visiting Assistant Professor of Catholic Studies 

AOS: Catholic Philosophy or Theology.

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts at Colorado State University invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor. Primary teaching and research responsibilities will be within the Department of Philosophy. 

The position will require engagement with local or regional communities; the precise form taken by this outreach will be subject to negotiation with the candidate. This position supports C.S.U.’s commitment to engaged scholarship, in accordance with C.S.U.’s land grant mission, and will involve making intentional connection between faculty activity – teaching, research, and service – and the public in ways that respond to community interests and concerns.  The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of the Catholic philosophical and theological traditions, research interests informed by that understanding, and an enthusiasm for sharing this knowledge and research with diverse student and community groups. The teaching load is 2-2.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Philosophy, Religion, Theology or related discipline with doctoral work within the Catholic intellectual tradition;
  • Publications or evidence of strong research and scholarly promise in Philosophy, Philosophical Theology, or related discipline;
  • Ability to teach courses in philosophy, or related discipline in the liberal arts;
  • Promise of excellence in engaged scholarship/outreach;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness;

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level;
  • Promise of excellence and commitment to engaged scholarship and community engagement through research, teaching and outreach programs; 
  • Ability to model the exploration and discussion of religion-society issues publicly in a rigorous, interfaith, mutually beneficial way.
  • Ability to support interdisciplinary courses, goals and activities; 
  • Ability to advance the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion;
  • AOC that complements existing departmental strengths

Effective starting date is August 16, 2021. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.

The Department includes approximately 135 undergraduate majors and minors in Philosophy and 13-15 Masters students in the terminal M.A. degree program. With faculty from a wide variety of areas in philosophy, predominantly working in the analytic tradition, the department has particular strengths in applied ethics and global philosophies.  The department has historically supported a broad and inclusive approach to philosophy.  Its three undergraduate concentrations include one in Global Philosophies and Religions, and it currently has scholars working in areas such as Islamic philosophy and Buddhist philosophy.

Colorado State University has an enrollment of approximately 34,000 residential students, including 4,000 graduate students. It is a Carnegie I Research-Extensive University and is recognized as one of the premier institutions of higher education in the western United States. The Department of Philosophy is housed in the College of Liberal Arts, which enjoys among the largest college enrollments and faculty numbers at the university.
