Job description

The lecturer will administer and teach courses in the Second-Language Philosophy Professional Concentration of the Philosophy Department M.A  The lecturer will support second language Philosophy students to improve their oral and written communication skills and improve their English language proficiency so that they can be competitive applicants to doctorate programs in Philosophy. Administration will involve taking the lead in publicizing, recruiting, and admitting new students to the program. It will also involve evaluation of applicants’ English language proficiency, ongoing language assessment, advising students, and tracking their progress through the program. Instruction will involve developing and delivering ESL courses that are a part of the Second-Language Philosophy M.A. curriculum, as well as individual consultations with students and walk-along courses attached to varying philosophy seminars and courses.  The lecturer will work closely with leadership from the Department of Philosophy and Purdue Language and Cultural Exchange (PLaCE).

This is a non-tenure track, nine-month, renewable full-time position (annual renewal based upon satisfactory performance review, staffing needs, and funding).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, Second Language Studies, Applied Linguistics, Educational Linguistics or other closely related field, with some background in Philosophy; or Master’s degree in Philosophy with some background in ESL, second language studies, or other closely related field.
  • At least two years of teaching experience, preferably at the college level.
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring graduate-level academic writing.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with curriculum design and development of teaching materials.
  • Experience in language testing, rating, or assessment.
  • Experience in program administration.
  • Proficiency in a second language and/or experience living or working in an international context
