Job description

The Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies and the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invite applications and nominations for the endowed chair “Foundation for Hellenic Studies—Illinois Chair in Hellenic Studies.” We seek a scholar in the humanities with a research focus on any aspect of Hellenic Studies, broadly understood. Areas of research focus may range from antiquity to the foundation of the modern Greek state to the present. Preference will be given to scholars who demonstrate in their research or teaching diachronic expertise in Greek culture and history. The appointment will reside in the Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies or the Department of History. Shared appointments between these two units may be possible when appropriate.

The successful candidate will provide leadership in Hellenic Studies and develop a compelling and sustainable plan for excellence in research, teaching, service, and community engagement. The endowed “Foundation for Hellenic Studies—Illinois Chair in Hellenic Studies” will work with key units and communities at UIC and the Chicago metropolitan area to promote the value of Hellenic history and culture through scholarship, teaching, student engagement, and community outreach.

The Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies and the Department of History are comprised of renowned scholars working in a wide range of fields in the humanities, with expertise in literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics, interdisciplinary studies, women and gender studies, and history. The ideal candidate will complement and expand these departments and the university’s present research and educational strengths, mission, and goals. Modern Greek is presently offered as a language option for our students.

UIC is an R1 institution with an established reputation for excellence in research. It is also proudly a minority-serving institution with a racially, ethnically, and economically diverse student body. Candidates should address how their professional experience and activities have prepared them to further UIC's distinct research and access mission and an inclusive liberal arts education in LAS.

The desired appointment date is August 16, 2022. Salary is competitive based on qualifications. To apply, complete an online application at https://jobs.uic.edu and upload a cover letter, full curriculum vitae, and the names and full contact information of four references. Nominations should be forwarded to Dean Astrida Orle Tantillo at [email protected] and Rosilie Hernández at [email protected] by August 15, 2021, to receive full consideration. Applications should be received by September 29, 2021, to receive full consideration.
