Job description

Position Overview:

The Department of Humanities and Philosophy at the University of Central Oklahoma invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2022.

The Humanities and Philosophy department is a joint department, consisting of seventeen full-time faculty in Humanities or in Philosophy. The department offers BA degrees in Humanities and in Philosophy; minors in Classical Studies, Humanities, Philosophy, and Religious Studies; and an MA degree in Liberal Studies. Both Humanities and Philosophy courses are components of the university's core curriculum required for all undergraduates.

The Humanities program offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of aesthetics, art, film, literature, and religion from diverse cultures across world history. Humanities faculty represent the many facets of the discipline, embodying in their teaching and research the interdisciplinary nature of the field. The Philosophy program covers core areas in philosophy and its history.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

The successful applicant will be expected to teach introductory-level core curriculum courses in both Philosophy (Intro to Philosophy; Contemporary Moral Problems; Logic & Critical Thinking; Social and Political Philosophy) and in Humanities (General Humanities - Ancient to Medieval; General Humanities - Renaissance to Modern).

In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to teach upper-division courses in their area of specialty in Humanities and/or Philosophy. The ability to teach courses that expand our curricular offerings in non-Western Philosophy and/or Humanities is strongly preferred.

Qualifications

Experience Required:

A completed PhD in either Philosophy or in a Humanities field (such as Art History, Cinema Studies, History, Literature, Musicology, Religious Studies, Visual Culture, or other related disciplines), from a regionally accredited or internationally recognized college or university by beginning of appointment.

Experience Preferred:

A complementary graduate degree from the other side of our department (e.g. a Philosophy MA with an Asian Studies PhD, or an Art History MA with a Philosophy PhD) is valued but not required.

Demonstrated ability to use interdisciplinary methods in teaching courses that incorporate a mix of ideas, literature, film, music, visual or performing arts is appreciated. Ability to diversify the curriculum in under-represented areas of humanities and/or philosophy is highly valued.

Significant teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred. Experience teaching diverse student populations is desirable.
