Job description |
The Department of Philosophy at Mount St. Mary’s University seeks an outstanding teacher–scholar for the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) beginning August 2022. The area of specialization and area of competence are open, but the department is especially interested in candidates who can complement established strengths in Western philosophy through engagement with Africana, Latin-American, Native American/Indigenous, or Asian philosophy. The ideal candidate will have Ph.D. in hand by August 2022 (exceptional ABD will be considered), lived experience as part of a traditionally underrepresented group, and a commitment to teaching as part of an integrated liberal arts core curriculum. Candidates must be well versed in the history of philosophy and qualified to teach a two-semester, historically structured introduction to philosophy as well as an ethics course, both of which are requirements of the university’s undergraduate core curriculum. The successful candidate will be prepared to help the department diversify and complement its existing course offerings and contribute meaningfully to the department’s ongoing discussion about diversifying the core curriculum. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate an interest in teaching the First-Year Symposium, a seminar-style course with small class enrollments that introduces students to our liberal-arts-based core and that is required of entering undergraduates. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to teach in other associated programs, including the seminary’s pre-theology program, the African-American Studies program, and Philosophy, Politics and Economics. 7 undergraduate courses per year (2–3 preparations per semester), possible supervision of individual thesis projects, and the usual non-teaching duties. Who We Are Mount St. Mary’s is the second oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in America. A beautiful rural residential campus hosts over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students and a 13:1 student/teacher ratio. Nestled at the foot of the Catoctin Mountains in north central Maryland the campus is within easy driving distance to Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. We are a vibrant academic community that strives to graduate men and women who cultivate a mature spiritual life, who live by high intellectual and moral standards, who respect the dignity of other persons, who see and seek to resolve the problems facing humanity, and who commit themselves to live as responsible citizens. Mount St. Mary’s seeks faculty members who are eager to engage and support our Catholic identity. Applicants’ cover letters should discuss how they might contribute to the university’s Catholic liberal arts mission, how their work engages with the Catholic intellectual tradition, or how their own faith tradition informs their vocation as teacher and scholar. The Mount seeks to build an inclusive faculty that can engage the interests of an increasingly diverse student population. The university has a strong institutional commitment to excellence through diversity in its educational programs and employment practices; we actively seek and welcome applications from candidates with exceptional qualifications, particularly those with demonstrable commitments to a more inclusive society and world. Successful candidates will share our commitment to the dignity and solidarity of all persons and the value of intercultural understanding.
