Visiting Professor of Philosophy (EXPIRED)

Duke Kunshan University (DKU) invites applications for the position of Visiting Professor of Philosophy, beginning in the 2022-23 academic year. The area of specialization is open, but the successful candidate will be able to teach, in addition courses that reflect their expertise, “Ethics, Citizenship, and the Examined Life,” a course within DKU’s core curriculum.  We welcome candidates at any rank, including Visiting Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor.  Mid-career and senior faculty seeking sabbatical appointments are encouraged especially to apply.  The successful candidate will obtain a non-renewable appointment of between one and three years, and will be expected to teach between 4 and 5 courses per year.  The length of the appointment will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and in the case of sabbatical appointments, the candidate’s professional obligations to a home institution. In general, candidates are encouraged to identify what other courses they might teach within DKU's interdisciplinary curriculum.

In order to meet Chinese visa requirements, prior to the position start date international (non-Chinese) candidates must have worked full-time (work experience obtained while studying full-time is not considered as full-time work experience) for at least two years in a relevant area (including post-doctoral work) after receiving their Bachelor’s degree, or begin their appointment at DKU within 12 months of obtaining their master’s degree/Ph.D. and without having work experience between graduation date on master’s degree diploma/Ph.D. diploma and position start date.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a relevant field. Evidence of excellent teaching or teaching promise is required, and experience working in an interdisciplinary setting is desirable.  While DKU is dedicated to providing a residential learning experience consistent with the best liberal arts colleges, if current travel restrictions persist, candidates may be able work remotely until they are able to obtain a visa and enter China.
