Job description

The Department of Philosophy at West Virginia University invites applications for two positions in ethics at the rank of Assistant Professor starting August 2022. Applicants must have an area of specialization (AOS) in either Health Care Ethics or Environmental Ethics. Areas of competence (AOC) are open. These are 9-month, full-time, tenure-track positions with full benefits. The typical teaching load is 3 courses per semester.

The successful candidates must have a PhD in Philosophy by August 2022. Candidates are expected to develop a program of research in the area of ethics and excel at teaching undergraduate courses in health care ethics or environmental ethics. The Department currently has strengths in both the continental and analytic traditions, and is open to applicants whose work is grounded in non-Western philosophical traditions as well. We are particularly interested in applicants who will increase our course offerings in one or more areas of applied ethics. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the land-grant mission of the university by collaborating on WVU initiatives that aim to make a positive ethical impact on our community and the world.  Such collaborative projects can include – but are not limited to – initiatives involving WVU’s Davis College of Agriculture (land use, pollution impact and mitigation, conservation efforts, wildlife management, and so on), Health Sciences (consulting and collaboration on the ethical dimensions of health-care research), and/or the Medical School (ethics of patient care and patient-centered research).

The WVU Philosophy Department is an intellectually vibrant, supportive, and collegial undergraduate program with all the opportunities and expectations of an R1 research university. All of our faculty are active in research and dedicated teachers. We have approximately 60 majors and a lively student philosophy club.  In addition to welcoming a few world-renowned philosophers each year, we host the Mid-Atlantic Philosophy of Language Workshop, a New Voices in Philosophy Speaker Series which brings early-career scholars to campus to present exciting work in their fields, an annual In-House Conference that showcases award-winning student essays and faculty work in progress, and the Summer Conference in Continental Ethics in partnership with Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania.

WVU is an R1 research land-grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area.  Morgantown has been recognized as one of the most livable small cities in the U.S. There are extensive recreational opportunities, excellent public schools, and a supportive University environment in which to develop a visible and productive career.  The WVU Dual Career Program is available to assist candidates with suitable employment opportunities for spouses or partners.

In addition, please arrange for 3 letters of reference to be sent electronically to [email protected]. Candidates should direct their questions to Search Committee Chair, Dr. David Cerbone, at: [email protected]. Review of completed applications will begin on November 19, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.
