Job description |
About Sacred Heart University: As the second-largest independent Catholic university in New England, and one of the fastest-growing in the U.S., Sacred Heart University is a national leader in shaping higher education for the 21st century. SHU offers nearly 90 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs on its Fairfield, Conn., campus. Sacred Heart also has satellites in Connecticut, Luxembourg and Ireland and offers online programs. More than 9,000 students attend the University's nine colleges and schools: Arts & Sciences; Communication, Media & the Arts; Social Work; Computer Science & Engineering; Health Professions; the Isabelle Farrington College of Education; the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology; the Dr. Susan L. Davis, R.N., & Richard J. Henley College of Nursing; and St. Vincent's College. Sacred Heart stands out from other Catholic institutions as it was established and led by laity. The contemporary Catholic university is rooted in the rich Catholic intellectual tradition and the liberal arts, and at the same time cultivates students to be forward thinkers who enact change-in their own lives, professions and in their communities. The Princeton Review includes SHU in its Best 387 Colleges-2022 Edition, "Best Northeastern" and Best Business Schools-2021 Edition. Sacred Heart is home to the award-winning, NPR-affiliated radio station, WSHU, a Division I athletics program and an impressive performing arts program that includes choir, band, dance and theatre.
The Department of Philosophy, Theology, and Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the initial rank of Lecturer with an area of specialization in Ancient Philosophy. The successful candidate's expected teaching responsibilities will include substantial participation in the University-required Critical Thinking course and undergraduate courses. The ideal candidate is an excellent teacher committed to collegiality and willing to advise undergraduate students and contribute to the needs of the department, college, and university. The department strongly supports Sacred Heart University's commitment to diversity and encourages applications from minorities, women, and persons of every sexual orientation and gender identity.
About the Department of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies: The Department of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies offers courses and programs of study that explore important and enduring questions of meaning--questions that human beings throughout the centuries and in every culture have asked. We propose that a student cannot call himself or herself educated without having wrestled honestly with these critical questions. We invite students to take core courses in Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies with an open and critical mind.
Review of applications will begin November 15, 2021, and continue until the position is filled. Qualified candidates should submit: 1) letter of interest, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) statement of teaching philosophy, 4) statement of research program, 5) copies of graduate transcripts, 6) writing sample, and 7) examples of syllabi from courses taught (if available). Three current letters of recommendation will be required if you are selected for a screening interview. Application materials should be submitted electronically via this portal only. Sacred Heart University is a space that respects and embraces differences, recognizes the unique contributions that individuals can make, and creates a community that maximizes the potential of all faculty and staff. As an equal opportunity employer applications from qualified candidates who reflect the wider world in which we live are encouraged. |
