AOS: Clinical Ethics

AOC: Open

This job is a joint position, split between the Department of Philosophy and Norton Healthcare. The ideal candidate will have completed a PhD with expertise in clinical ethics and preferably additional postgraduate training (i.e. fellowship or postdoc) in clinical ethics consultation. PhD coursework normally must include at least 18 graduate hours in Philosophy.

In the Department of Philosophy, teaching responsibilities include both graduate and undergraduate courses. Typically, this will include a core clinical ethics course in the Interdisciplinary Health Care Ethics MA, and additional courses as needed to support biomedical ethics training for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Release time available for administrative or higher than normal service or mentoring responsibilities. Summer and winter teaching may be undertaken for additional pay, provided the individual is making good progress toward tenure & promotion. Research should focus on clinical ethics topics.

Louisville’s fourth largest employer, Norton Healthcare has more than 17,000 employees across 5 hospitals and a regional network of medical practices and immediate care centers. At Norton Healthcare, duties include conducting ethics consultations in collaboration with ethics committees, precepting ethics consultants, building ethics capacity and expertise, improving ethics policy and practice, and involving students from the Health Care Ethics program in ethics consultation throughout the Norton system.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research and publication program and to participate in faculty self-governance.

Position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Candidates should have demonstrated experience working with diverse students, faculty, staff, and community members, and a commitment to continue such engagement in ways that continually build inclusion and belonging for all.

The Department of Philosophy encourages candidates to apply who have a demonstrated capacity to create inclusive work environments, will work effectively on increasingly diverse teams, and will serve the increasingly diverse students we admit and want to attract. We especially encourage women, minorities, and persons with disabilities to apply.

All requirements for the Ph.D. in philosophy must be completed by June 30, 2022.

Review of applications will begin on Nov. 15, 2021.

Short-listed candidates will be contacted in December for the purpose of setting up video-conference interviews. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Department will conduct the search remotely.
