Job description

Position Summary:

The School of History and Philosophy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications for an endowed chair in American Philosophy and Director of the Center for Dewey Studies. This is a faculty appointment in Philosophy at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with a joint appointment in Morris Library, whose Special Collections houses exceptional archives pertaining to American philosophy, most notably the papers and library of John Dewey.

Established by a gift from Jo Ann Boydston, the first director of the Center for Dewey Studies, and Donald N. Boydston, long-time SIU Carbondale Athletic Director, the purpose of the Boydston Professor of American Philosophy is to “promote critical inquiry, pragmatism, humanism, and rational thought as set forth in the works and writings of the American philosopher John Dewey.”

Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of this position is to direct the Center for Dewey Studies, continuing the Center’s digitization of resources, in connection with digital humanities projects across campus, and fundraising for the Center and Morris Library.

A typical teaching load is 1-1 with at least one course on an aspect of American philosophy, especially Pragmatism and the philosophy of John Dewey.  The selected individual will mentor undergraduate and graduate students, maintain an active program of peer-reviewed research, and use their digital humanities expertise to reinvent and expand access to the special collections of the library, including the Center for Dewey Studies, with its 14 satellite centers around the world. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. and achieved rank of Associate Professor or Professor in Philosophy or some other relevant discipline, such as American studies, education, or history. 
  • Strong, established record of scholarship in American philosophy with an emphasis on John Dewey.
  • Expertise and experience in applying digital humanities to the study of philosophy and related disciplines, in order to continue the Center’s work in digitizing resources and to promote digital humanities throughout the university.
  • Must have appropriate professional stature in the field of American philosophy, as demonstrated by a record of significant publications, professional lectures, and involvement with relevant professional associations. 
  • Must have demonstrated administrative and fundraising skills.
  • Must have multiple, demonstrated skills in digital humanities, such as text analysis, mapping, digital exhibits, network analysis, data mining, data visualization, digital documentary editing, digital publishing, digital archiving, digital pedagogy.
