Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Simon Fraser University, in conjunction with SFU’s new interdisciplinary minor in Social Data Analytics, invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor beginning July 15, 2022. The position is administratively housed in the Department of Philosophy with teaching and service obligations split between Philosophy and the Social Data Analytics Program, two courses per year in each unit.

AOS: Open. AOC: Open. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated capacity for research and teaching at the intersection of philosophy and social data analytics, including teaching the required course SDA 270 Data, Ethics, and Society (for more information, see https://www.sfu.ca/socialdata.html). Possible areas of philosophical specialization include but are not limited to ethics, social and political philosophy, epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, computing science and artificial intelligence as well as applied research in these areas. Candidates with academic qualifications or relevant training within social data analytics are strongly preferred.

Duties include research, both undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision of MA students, and administrative service in both Philosophy and the Social Data Analytics Program. The teaching load is 4 courses per year on a trimester system (two courses per semester for two semesters and one research semester). Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent in Philosophy (or other relevant discipline) by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter.
