Job description

The Philosophy Department and the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University seek applications for a full-time, joint appointment at the rank of Full or (tenured or tenure-track) Associate Professor beginning Fall 2022. The area of specialization is interdisciplinary research in Ethics & Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning. The successful applicant will have deep knowledge of, and experience and publications in, the application of normative theory to AI/machine learning (e.g. privacy, algorithmic fairness, transparency, etc.) and a strong background in either the disciplines of machine learning/AI or philosophy, with substantial knowledge of the other discipline. Publications in both philosophy and AI/machine learning are preferred but not required.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate who can play a leadership role in consolidating and extending Carnegie Mellon’s active and growing efforts in Ethics and AI. The Department of Philosophy and the School of Computer Science strongly support interdisciplinary and collaborative research, and we encourage individuals from diverse intellectual and scientific backgrounds to apply. Experience with or interest in collaborations with government, non-profit, or industry partners is an asset but is not a requirement. The standard teaching load is 2.5 courses over 2 semesters, both undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as other non-teaching responsibilities.

Opportunities for leadership and institutional impact include co-supervision of the K&L Gates Endowment for Ethics and Computational Technologies, which supports research in ethical and policy issues surrounding artificial intelligence. Exceptional candidates may be considered for either the K&L Gates Professorship in Ethics and Computational Technologies or the K&L Gates Career Development Professorship in Ethics and Computational Technologies. Other opportunities for leadership and coordination include leadership of, or coordination with, the Ethics/AI certificate program (in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Computer Science, and the School of Engineering), the Societal and Human Impacts of Future Technologies minor in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences,  the Block Center for Technology and Society, and other Pittsburgh centers in related areas.
