Job description

Professor of Philosophy (Open-Rank) Berkeley, CA

The Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology in Berkeley, California, is expanding its Department of Philosophy and invites applications for an Open-Rank Professor position beginning in Fall 2022. Applications are encouraged with specializations in Ancient or Medieval Philosophy, and particularly the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.

DSPT is in the first year of an iterative 5-year strategic plan for the expansion of the Philosophy Department with the goal to continue to build the Thomistic tradition of integrating philosophy and theology. Situated in the Bay Area, we also strive to integrate Thomistic thought with contemporary culture. This takes the form of our God Made Manifest project, and also includes our engagement in the Philosophy of Technology and Artificial Intelligence, making use of our proximity to the Silicon Valley with its tech companies, but also research groups connected to the Vatican.

DSPT is continuously engaged in the Philosophy of Religion, taking advantage of several religious institutes of the Graduate Theological Union with which to partner and co-teach, and the study of Phenomenology. In the Fall of 2021, we also began the PHILOI International program, which brings Dominican Student Brothers from Provinces around the world to study philosophy in the Dominican tradition.

We seek a motivated and adaptable professor to support this strategic plan and to further bring the DSPT into the network of current philosophers working in the field to expand the impact of the school in philosophical research throughout not only the nation, but the world. We are looking for someone who will make a strong commitment to the mission and vision of DSPT and the benefit it brings to individual lives, communities, and society through its education of lay and religious students.

The successful candidate will:
• have earned a PhD in Philosophy by Summer 2022;
• have openness and flexibility of teaching the courses of our core curriculum as needed;
• teach four graduate courses per year on the semester system that will serve DSPT’s student body and programmatic needs, as well as our broader GTU and UC Berkeley communities; • show significant familiarity with and affinity for the Thomistic tradition of philosophy and theology;

• develop a research agenda that leads to peer-reviewed publications;
• be a contributing member of a professional philosophical society, such as the ACPA or APA;

• direct (commensurate with experience) and participate on comprehensive exam, thesis, and dissertation committees;

• provide service to the school as appropriate to rank;
• seek membership in the GTU’s Core Doctoral Faculty when eligible.

About DSPT

The Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology, a member of the Graduate Theological Union, is a community of scholars committed to the pursuit of truth as revealed in the Gospel and discovered by human reason. Inspired by the Dominican practice of disciplined inquiry and learned preaching, the School draws its students into the rich tradition of classical philosophy and Catholic theology, especially as exemplified by St. Thomas Aquinas, and from this tradition engages contemporary scholarship and culture in mutual enrichment.

Both as a Center of Studies of the Order of Preachers and an apostolate of the Western Dominican Province, the mission of the School is to prepare religious, clerics, and laity for academic and apostolic vocations.

DSPT grants Master of Arts degrees (in Philosophy or Theology) and the Master of Divinity degree, and is launching a hybrid, mostly-online Master of Arts in Theology for Ecclesial Mission; see https://www.dspt.edu/academic-programs. DSPT renews faculty contracts on a year-to-year basis.
