Job description

Georgetown University in Washington D.C. invites applications for 1 non-tenure line Assistant Professor position, contingent on funding, for Ethics Lab, an initiative of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. The position is for 3 years, renewable on an open-ended basis depending on project funding, with potential for non-tenure career promotions.

Ethics Lab brings philosophy and design thinking together to develop novel courses in areas of emerging ethics; design and deliver creative exercises for embedding ethics across the curriculum; and provide ethics-centered consultation to research, policy, and industry project teams working in arenas of high complexity. Ethics Lab has particular interests in ethics of emerging technologies (including data and digital technologies), bioethics (including disabilities, public health, and clinical research), and intersectional social justice (including racial justice).

Ethics Lab seeks a philosopher to join the Lab’s Senior Team. Qualified applicants will have demonstrated experience in pedagogical innovation; research accomplishments that show potential for future policy and academic work in applied ethics; and a demonstrable commitment to real world-action. This position will have specific responsibilities for leading coordination and expansion of the Lab’s educational portfolio. The successful candidate will directly teach 1-2 courses a year and oversee success of the embedded ethics program, which is delivered with help from Ethics Lab postdocs. As part of the Senior Team, the position will also participate in strategic planning, help mentor Ethics Lab postdocs, join selected direct impact projects, and help advance the Lab’s philosophy research in methods of highly applied ethics.

Requirements include a PhD in philosophy, an AOS in ethics (normative or applied) or political philosophy, experience in pedagogical innovation, and a demonstrable commitment to bringing philosophy into service of immediate, real-world issues. An AOC in the ethics of emerging technologies, bioethics, or philosophy of race/critical race theory are strong advantages but not required, as are prior experience in the worlds of tech, health, or racial justice.

Candidates should be philosophically rigorous but also highly creative, comfortable working in a collaborative team environment, and practicing philosophy in contexts of innovation, ambiguity, and complexity. Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills, facility with interdisciplinary work, and be able to effectively manage multiple projects. Robust onboarding to the team, its mission, and its methods will be provided. For more on Ethics Lab, please visit the website.

The position is a 12-month appointment with a start date no later than August 8, 2022, and carries a highly competitive salary. For benefit information, see link. The Assistant Professor will report to Prof. Margaret Little, Professor of Philosophy and Director of Ethics Lab.

Georgetown University is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer fully dedicated to achieving a diverse faculty and staff. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, national origin, marital status, veteran status, disability or other categories protected by law.
