DEPARTMENT: The Center for Ethics and Human Values at The Ohio State University

POSITION: Associate Director

DESCRIPTION: The Ohio State University invites applications for an Associate Director for The Center for Ethics and Human Values (CEHV). This position will start July 1, 2022 and is being offered for an initial 2 year term with the possibility of extension. The CEHV aims to advance reflection and discussion on the ethical issues that underlie social and political challenges. We are a faculty-led, University-level center with interdisciplinary collaborations with more than forty academic departments and programs at OSU, covering a wide range of scientific and humanistic disciplines. We work closely with university efforts including the Shared Values Initiative, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Research. The Center helps the University fulfill its responsibilities to students, faculty, and the broader community by advancing knowledge and facilitating discussions of ethical issues within and across disciplines at The Ohio State University. OVERVIEW: The Associate Director collaborates with the Center Director and faculty steering committee to further the mission of CEHV by supporting and its programs. The Associate Director manages the administrative, operational and communication components of CEHV’s major projects, including its COMPAS (Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society) program, the CARE (Conversations About Research Ethics) program, Ethics Circle, ETHOS, Outreach, and other initiatives.  The Associate Director also helps to facilitate CEHV’s fellowship programs, draft grant proposals, and assemble progress reports. The Associate Director will work with the staff associate and a College of Arts and Sciences business operations manager to initiate fiscal processes related to events and programs, and will provide supervision of the CEHV staff associate, graduate associates, and undergraduate assistants. (75%) The Associate Director will also be responsible for teaching one course per semester in the College of Arts and Sciences. These courses include undergraduate ethics and political philosophy courses, as well as CEHV’s “Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society” course on civil discourse, associated with its COMPAS program. (25%)

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Master's Level Degree in philosophy or political science or philosophy of education. A Doctoral Degree in philosophy or political science or philosophy of education is strongly preferred. Advanced knowledge of the field of ethics and human values and the ability to effectively communicate about moral issues that arise across disciplines, in matters of public policy, and in organizational contexts is desired. We are seeking candidates with experience in program management and development, and with teaching experience at the undergraduate level in ethics or political philosophy. Experience in writing grant proposals is relevant. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
