Job description

The Philosophy Department at Saint Peter’s University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Instructor/Assistant Professor beginning in fall of 2022. The Department of Philosophy consists of two full-time faculty members with expertise in a range of areas in the history of philosophy, modern philosophy, ethics, and other topical areas.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach 12 contact hours each semester. This usually involves four lecture sections per semester (4/4), including sections in the philosophy sequence in the SPU core curriculum as well as upper-level philosophy electives.  The successful candidate must share a deep commitment to effective teaching, developing and teaching new and innovative philosophy elective courses appropriate to his/her area(s) of expertise, and mentoring students.

The ideal candidate should have a broad competence in both the history of philosophy and normative ethics, and be able to teach courses in introductory philosophy, applied ethics, and logic and critical thinking. Dedication to teaching undergraduates, participation in Departmental and University activities and service, building an active research program, seeking out and applying for extramural funding, helping to develop curriculum in the philosophy major and minor, and recruitment of students for the philosophy major and minor will be important elements of the successful candidate’s duties.

A Ph.D. in Philosophy with previous teaching experience is preferred; ABD candidates will be considered at the rank of Instructor.
