Job description

The Social Justice Centre is launching a competition for the Barry Pashak Postdoctoral Fellowship in Social Justice for the 2022-2023 academic year.

POSITION: This is a 1-year research postdoc at the Social Justice Centre at Concordia University in Montreal (downtown campus). Subject to evaluation, the position is renewable for an additional 12 months. Salary: CAD 52,000 (including benefits).

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

For the purposes of this fellowship, social justice is defined broadly to include questions related to the distribution of wealth, power, opportunities, and privileges within a society as well as across societies. Applications are open to scholars from any discipline in social sciences or humanities, who will make significant contributions to research on social justice. Proposals whose orientation is interdisciplinary and which are conceptually and theoretically innovative will be given preference. Applicants are expected to have received their PhD by the start of the fellowship or soon after.

All projects related to social justice research will be considered, but applications focusing on the following fields are especially encouraged: political economy and feminist political economy, economic alternatives (post-growth, degrowth, post-capitalist transitions, community economies, etc.), environmental justice, social movements, social justice and work, social and political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of law, philosophical theories of egalitarian justice, Marxism and socialism, and novel conceptions of democratic and participatory politics.

Applicants should have fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

The postdoc is open to candidates who have recently been awarded a PhD or equivalent (within the last 5 years, unless special circumstances apply).

Concordia University is committed to employment equity and welcomes applications from underrepresented groups, including women, visible minorities, Indigenous persons, members of sexual minorities, and persons with disabilities.

 JOB DESCRIPTION

The primary responsibility of the fellow will be to carry out their research project, which must be on a topic in social justice. Additionally, the fellow is expected to give a presentation on their research during the academic year, participate in all activities of the Centre, and organize one event related to their research. There is no teaching associated with this position.

THE CENTRE

Located at Concordia University in downtown Montreal, the Social Justice Centre was launched in 2019 by Pablo Gilabert and Katharina Nieswandt. It is now co-directed by Bengi Akbulut (Geography, Planning, and the Environment) and Pablo Gilabert (Philosophy). The Centre organizes events, academic workshops, and funds graduate fellows.
