Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Northern Arizona University welcomes applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor (non-tenure track). The Area of Specialization (AOS) and Area of Competence (AOC) are open, but the department has strong preferences for applicants able to teach courses in Political Philosophy, Ethics (especially Environmental Ethics), Latinx, and Indigenous Philosophy. The typical course load for this position is four undergraduate courses per semester. The successful candidate will support the teaching of a 100 level, large-capacity course, on Borderlands Philosophy which serves General Studies requirements. The department has an interest in candidates that can teach some combination of Introduction to Ethics, Environmental Ethics, and upper-division courses in Political Philosophy that serve our Philosophy, Politics, and Law program.  Other responsibilities include mentoring students and performing service activities in the department, college, university, and local community. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Philosophy or related field conferred by start date. 
  • Teaching experience as the primary instructor for 3 courses

Preferred Qualifications  

  • AOS: Open, but the department has strong preferences for candidates with experience in Political Philosophy and/or Ethics (especially Environmental Ethics).
  • AOC: Open, but the department has strong preferences for candidates with experience in Latinx and/or Indigenous Philosophy. 
  • Active research program, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and/or service.
  • Experience teaching large capacity undergraduate courses
  • Demonstrated strength in developing programming that elevates the public profile of Philosophy, including the ability to secure grants or other funding in its support.  
  • Ability to engage across philosophical sub-fields and conduct interdisciplinary research.
