Job description

Purdue University’s Department of Philosophy is seeking either:

  • a philosopher of cognitive science/social science with expertise in moral psychology, or
  • a theoretically oriented psychologist/social scientist with expertise in moral psychology

for a postdoctoral research associate position of one calendar year (August 15, 2022–August 14, 2023).

AOS: Philosophy of mind or cognitive science or moral psychology, all broadly construed; AOC: Open.

Principal Duties: Purdue is a member of the American Association of Universities, and seeks a philosopher or social scientist of exceptional promise who will contribute to the excellence of our department and college. This position will have no teaching duties associated with it, but requires strong organization skills in order to coordinate efforts among multiple faculty members to pursue external funding in support of projects on the evolution of norms and norm psychology. Prior experience in grant writing is helpful but not necessary. The position includes a (12-month) salary of $55,000 and an annual research allowance of $1,500.

Qualifications: To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have received a Ph.D. in philosophy or cognitive/social science between September 1, 2017 and June 30, 2022.

Application Procedure: All materials will be submitted electronically through careers.purdue.edu (Requisition 19045). Initial applications only require submission of a CV and cover letter, including short description of the candidate’s research agenda and relevant experience. Those deemed competitive will be asked to submit further materials, which must include: (i) brief cover letter, (ii) curriculum vitae (including dissertation abstract and research statement), (iii) a writing sample of approximately 8-10K words, and (iv) a diversity and inclusion statement addressing scholarship, instruction, or engagement (see below). Letters of reference should not be included in the initial application but should be prepared for quick submission if requested. If letters are requested from the candidate at a later stage, instructions for how to submit letters will be communicated directly to the candidate.

Applications are due July 1, 2022. Incomplete applications will not be considered, and a background check will be required for employment in this position. Questions should be addressed to search committee chair, Prof. Taylor Davis ([email protected]).

Purdue University’s Department of Philosophy is committed to advancing diversity in all areas of faculty effort, including scholarship, instruction, and engagement. Candidates should address at least one of these areas in a separate Diversity and Inclusion Statement, indicating their past experiences, current interests or activities, and/or future goals to promote a climate that values diversity and inclusion.

Purdue University is an EOE/AA employer. All individuals, including minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply
