Job description

The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University invites applications for the position of Nancy Schaenen Endowed Visiting Scholar of Ethics and Assistant Director of Academic Services for the 2022-2023academic year. This is a one-year term position, beginning in summer 2022.

The Schaenen Scholar role involves teaching 1-2 courses in the appropriate academic department, working on a scholarly project of the Scholar’s choice, and sharing the product of that work in some way with the DePauw community. We will encourage and support the Schaenen Scholar’s efforts to engage intellectually with the campus in a variety of ways, which could include public lectures, arranging small symposia, hosting visiting scholars, leading faculty reading groups, serving as a guest lecturer in a class, and so on.

The Assistant Director of Academic Services role involves being a part of the core Prindle Institute management team, teaching a partial-credit course to Prindle interns, and helping to guide and execute programming, particularly in those initiatives that match the Assistant Director’s areas of specialization and interest.

We seek a scholar with a strong background and record of accomplishment and/or promise in ethics. A Ph.D. in Philosophy is preferred, although we will consider well-qualified candidates from other fields. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in ethical analysis and argument applied to issues of practical, professional, personal, and social concern and should have the desire and ability to engage non-specialists at all levels. Candidates should be passionate about the teaching and study of ethics in a liberal arts setting and eager to work with a diverse group of talented undergraduate students interested in ethics.

This position offers the benefits of time and resources for research and comes with a professional development budget. It also provides valuable administrative experience that should enable the successful candidate to contribute to or possibly start another ethics center or program. Regular interaction with DePauw’s students will help develop the visiting scholar’s teaching, advising, and mentoring skills.

The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics provides a compelling physical space and a distinctive forum for DePauw students, faculty, and staff that fosters ethics education, research, and dialogue. The Institute also has a national outreach mission to promote and encourage deep and careful thinking about ethical issues of immediate or perennial concern.
