Job description

Description:

The values of diversity and inclusion are deeply tied to the core of Alvernia University's mission, and, as an academic community, we believe the inclusion of diverse voices, especially those which have been historically marginalized, is of the utmost importance for establishing and maintaining a vibrant intellectual community.  The Future Professors Fellowship provides teaching and other professional experiences, mentoring, and potential employment opportunities within a university firmly committed to inclusive excellence.  This initiative is designed to support the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (CHESS) and encourage scholars whose expertise fits within one or several of our disciplinary foci.  The Program is open to pre-doctoral (ABD) candidates and recently graduated PhDs.  The fellows will gain experience teaching general introductory classes and will have the opportunity to design courses that correspond to their field of research.  Applicants from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility:

For this inaugural year of the Program, The College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences (CHESS)invites applications for a full-time Fellow to begin August 2022 for the 2022-2023 academic year.  The college seeks applicants who hold a Master's or terminal degree in a CHESS discipline (or who are ABD).  Alvernia is particularly interested in scholars working on social and political issues broadly conceived to include philosophy of race, Indigenous American philosophy, comparative philosophy, philosophy of gender, or a similar field and who can teach Logic at the introductory level.  The selected applicant may also have the opportunity to develop or co-develop courses for the B.A. that reflect their areas of teaching expertise.  Scholars with research that enhances Alvernia's diversity and inclusion initiatives are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

This fellowship program is designed to provide fellows with professional mentoring and research training under the guidance of established faculty.  Fellows will conduct research and/or creative work in their chosen field of study in collaboration with one or more Alvernia University faculty members.  Applicants will be responsible for teaching two courses in the Fall semester and three courses in the Spring semester of each year (no more than two preps per semester) to gain teaching expertise, contributing to the core requirements of a department as well as showcasing their area of their scholarly expertise.

Benefits:

The fellowship includes a stipend of 45,000 per year.

Participation in Alvernia's health benefits program (full benefits with same employer contribution as full-time faculty)

Housing at Alvernia's CollegeTowne campus.

Travel funding for presentation purposes (maximum of $1550).

Candidates will be considered favorably for new line hire.

To apply, candidates should submit the following:

  • Cover letter describing background, research interests and experience, passion to become a faculty member, and goals of work toward becoming a faculty member.

  • Curriculum vitae

  • Teaching interest, plans for teaching during the appointment period, and proposed course/s to teach.

  • Two letters of recommendation.

Deadline: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled.
