Job description

The Jagiellonian University in Kraków welcomes applications for a postdoctoral position ("adiunkt") in the project “Institutions as believers”, headed by Krzysztof Poslajko (Philosophy, Jagiellonian University). The project is funded by the Polish National Science Center as part of the OPUS 21 program.

Duties: The person appointed will be expected to engage in high-level research in social ontology/collective intentionality/legal theory, with special focus on the problem of attribution of beliefs and other intentional states to institutional entities. The position involves publishing in high-quality journals and giving talks at appropriate scholarly conferences and meetings. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to engage in collaboration with other team members (PI and one doctoral candidate). This is a full-time research position with no teaching obligations. Knowledge of Polish is not required.

Short project description: The aim of the project is to inquire into the question of whether it is possible to ascribe intentional states (especially beliefs) to a special category of group agents, namely institutional group agents such as corporations, courts, parliaments etc. The problem of institutional beliefs will be examined from the point of view of different philosophical sub-disciplines: philosophy of mind, philosophy of law, social ontology, and meta-metaphysics. There are three main research questions that are to be undertaken in the project:
1. Can the category of “belief” (as it is used in contemporary philosophy of mind) be applied to institutions?
2. Does analysis of the notion of institutions (as conceptualized by social ontology and philosophy of law) support the idea that they can be seen as subjects of beliefs?
3. What are the currently accepted meta-philosophical presuppositions of the debate about institutional beliefs, and what should they be?

The project’s work-in-progress website is here: https://filozofia.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/institutions-as-believers

Required qualifications: Candidates with Ph.D. in either philosophy or in legal theory are welcome. Persons with a background in both the metaphysics of law and the problem of collective intentionality are highly sought after. Preference will be given to candidates with promising publication record .

Eligible candidates must have gained their PhD no earlier than in 2015 (exemptions apply to child-bearing persons), and must meet the National Science Center’s criteria for post-doc candidates, which include:

1. they did not have the principal investigator as their research supervisor or auxiliary supervisor of their PhD dissertation.

2. their PhD degree has been awarded by another institution than the one planned to employ them at this post or they have completed a continuous and evidenced post-doctoral fellowship of at least 10 months in another institution than the host institution for the project and in another country than the one in which they have been conferred a PhD degree.

Salary: The salary will equal 10000 (ten thousand) PLN (gross salary plus social security contributions) per month. [Depending on the pension schemes, taxation regimes, etc., this should give about 6 k PLN net per month]. There is a budget for conferences. No teaching will be required.

Employment duration: The employment will last for 30 months.

Expected start date: October 2022 (negotiable).

The position is based at the Institute of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University, in central Kraków, Poland (52 Grodzka Street ; https://filozofia.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/start-en ). The person employed will also have the opportunity to take part in research activities of the Jagiellonian Centre for Law, Language and Philosophy (https://pjf.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/start).

How to apply: Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to make informal inquiries to the PI, at krzysztof.poslajko [at] uj.edu.pl - I will happily share the detailed grant description, talk about working arrangements, and offer some help with the formal application process.
