The Department of Philosophy invites applications from qualified candidates for a one-year Term appointment in Ethics and Social Philosophy at the rank of Instructor beginning July 15, 2022.

This is a teaching position with a load of 3.0 credits (six one-term courses) per regular academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to teach two sections of a large-enrollment Introductory Philosophy course, a graduate seminar on a special topic in ethics (e.g., applied ethics, moral theory, or meta-ethics), as well as a selection among the following courses: Philosophy of Human Rights; Happiness, Wellbeing, and the Good Life; Bioethics; Topics in Contemporary Social and Political philosophy; Introduction to environmental ethics. There are no research expectations associated with this position.

All or most of these courses will be taught in person with the possibility of one or two to be delivered online. Physical presence in Ottawa is required. However, if public health restrictions are implemented, the University may require that all or part of these courses be delivered remotely, online.

About the Academic Unit

The Department of Philosophy (https://carleton.ca/philosophy/) combines award-winning teaching with excellence in research. The department’s strengths are in two main areas: moral, social, and political philosophy, and the philosophy of mind, language, and knowledge. Several members of the department are active researchers in the history of philosophy. The department has close ties to the Department of Cognitive Science (https://carleton.ca/cognitivescience/) and is the administrative home of the Ph.D. program in Ethics and Public Affairs (https://carleton.ca/ethics/).

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in philosophy is strongly preferred. Strong background in ethics and social philosophy is expected. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate teaching excellence. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate fully in the life of the department, and to take on whatever tasks of departmental administration their time and interest allow.
