Job description |
The position is full-time academic year, limited to 07/01/2023 with anticipated renewal. The Department of Philosophy (PHL) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is seeking a faculty member with expertise in teaching courses in our Ethics curriculum (we currently offer courses in Theoretical and Practical ethics, with upper division courses focused on Healthcare ethics and Engineering ethics) as well as the ability to teach in one or more of the following departmental interest areas: Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Race and Critical Philosophies of Race, Feminist Philosophy, and Philosophy of Disability. The one-year appointment, starting in fall of 2022, will be at the rank of a non-tenure track lecturer. Annual reappointments may follow upon successful evaluations and review of teaching performance. The Department of Philosophy and the URI College of Arts and Sciences is committed to diversity, access, and inclusion and seeks to compose more diverse and equitable futures. As such, we particularly welcome candidates from groups that are historically underrepresented, marginalized, and/or excluded in the field who can engage a wide range of traditional and non-traditional students from different perspectives. Duties and Responsibilities: The selected candidate will join the PHL faculty as a lecturer and contribute to the department by teaching teach a total of 24 credits per year (12 credits per semester, typically in the form of 4 three-credit courses.) As some of our courses (including Ethics) are a part of URI’s general education program, lecturers are expected to deliver our Gen Ed requirements and participate in assessment of those courses (in addition to department level assessment.) As our department grows and changes, they will be a part of this process, participating in a collaborative and evolving shared curriculum development and instructional process. Lecturers may be asked to assist in other instruction-related service as designated by the department chair; however, they are not expected to perform college and university service beyond those duties listed above. Lecturers are not required to engage in scholarly activities; however, the application of pedagogical research to classroom practice is important to our department. Lecturers are evaluated through URI’s annual review process as prescribed in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, including a classroom observation and assessment of teaching that will be conducted by the department chair or their designee. Teaching excellence is cultivated, supported, and expected for lecturers. Lecturers may be eligible for promotion to senior lecturer or teaching professor, depending on time in rank, degree attained, and demonstrated teaching excellence. First consideration will be given to applications received by June 17, 2022. Second consideration may be given to applications received by July 8, 2022. Applications received subsequent to second consideration date (July 8, 2022) may not be given full consideration. APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE ONLY. The University of Rhode Island is an AA/EEOD employer. |
