Job description

Trent University invites applications from outstanding academics to be the inaugural Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership. Supported by a $2 million investment from the Jarislowsky Foundation, this prestigious appointment is one of five new endowed chairs at liberal arts and science universities across Canada who will form the first-ever network of its kind focused on educating tomorrow’s leaders in government, politics and the public service.

Trent’s Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership will be an eminent scholar of political ethics and governance appointed jointly to the Department of Philosophy and Department of Political Studies (or another Humanities and Social Sciences department) at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The inaugural Chair term will be for five years (with the possibility of renewal for one additional five-year term) to be held concurrently with the Trent University faculty appointment. The appointment will commence September 1, 2022 or thereafter.

Trent University is the top-ranked primarily undergraduate university in Ontario, Canada with a record of excellence in teaching, research and community-engaged scholarship. With access to a significant annual allocation of funding from a $4 million endowment, Trent’s Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership will develop an innovative program of scholarship (teaching and research) that will expand knowledge and training in the ethical practice of politics, fiduciary responsibility and democratic governance. This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional candidate to enhance Trent’s areas of strength in political theory and ethics in alignment with Trent’s strategic priorities. Trent’s Jarislowsky Chair will be expected to lead a new interdisciplinary program specialization in ethics, politics and governance with a particular regional emphasis on the governments, politics and public sectors of Ontario. The Chair also will be expected to establish partnerships that foster experiential learning, research and career opportunities for students.

Trent’s Jarislowsky Chair will be a founding member of the national Network of Jarislowsky Chairs in Trust and Political Leadership made up of five endowed Chairs at Acadia University, l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (in collaboration with l’École Nationale d’Administration Publique), Trent University, the University of Lethbridge and Vancouver Island University. The aim of the national network is to educate the next generation of politicians and public sector leaders in ethics, democratic values and responsible governance within the contexts of Canada’s diverse citizenship, democracy and commitment to meaningful Truth and Reconciliation. The Jarislowsky Chairs network will offer innovative academic programs and experiential learning opportunities. The Jarislowsky Chairs network will work collaboratively to develop, improve and promote communities of practice in ethics and fiduciary responsibility in political and governance decision making across Canada.
