Job description

We wish to appoint a Research Fellow in Philosophy with interests in studying social media. Applications welcome from scholars in ethics, political/legal philosophy, epistemology, philosophy of language, and the philosophy of technology (especially AI). The post-holder will join a new multi-disciplinary research team convened by Dr Jeffrey Howard and funded by UK Research & Innovation (UKRI). The project will host an array of scholars studying the governance of speech by social-media platforms. The project seeks to synthesize philosophical, legal, social-scientific and technological expertise to provide guidance on how to understand and combat harmful content (such as hate speech and misinformation) and to improve public discourse online.
The successful candidate will pursue a substantial independent research agenda directly connected to the themes of this project. They will also collaborate with team members to produce co-authored publications and public-facing outputs.
This post is funded for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal, and it is part of a multidisciplinary team. The successful post-holder could commence from 1 September 2022, but this date is flexible.
The post includes funded opportunities for participation at conferences and a research allowance. The post-holder will be a member of the UCL Institute of Law, Politics & Philosophy.
If the successful applicant has not yet received a PhD, appointment will be at the rank of Research Assistant until the PhD is awarded.   A completed, or nearly completed, PhD in Philosophy or a closely related field is essential.
Significant and demonstrable research interests and outputs in an area of philosophy directly relevant to the project, such as ethics, political philosophy, legal philosophy, political/social epistemology, philosophy of language, or the philosophy of technology (especially AI) and a strong background and interest in philosophical research methods is essential.
