Salary Grade 7: £37,474 - £42,155 per annum

We have an opportunity for a Research Associate to make a leading contribution to an AHRC project in the area of social epistemology broadly construed, and with a focus on themes related to epistemic autonomy; the candidate will work with Dr J Adam Carter (University of Glasgow / COGITO Epistemology Research Centre) in collaboration with Prof Neil Levy (University of Oxford / Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics) on the project ‘Expanding Autonomy: Scaffolded, Embedded and Distributed’.  The successful candidate will produce high-quality research in accordance with the project’s aims:

1. Reconceptualising autonomy (especially epistemic autonomy), in the light of the latest developments in the science of human agency (especially epistemic agency).

2. Coming to a fuller understanding of the normative value of autonomy, and its place in our moral and political, as well as our intellectual, lives.

3. Assessing the implications for a reconceptualized autonomy in more applied and practical contexts: specifically, in the context of informed consent procedures in medical ethics (and allied fields) and in decision-making as it falls within the remit of public policy (for example, decisions over diet, savings, housing, energy use, and so on).

4. Disseminating the results of this research widely.
