Job description

The Wabash College Philosophy Department invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Byron K. Trippet Assistant Professor of Philosophy. We seek to recruit a teacher-scholar who teaches and researches in an area of philosophy that has been underrepresented and that addresses the concerns of historically marginalized populations; for example, American philosophy, broadly construed, philosophy of race, decolonial philosophy, Indigenous philosophy, or Africana philosophy including the African diaspora. The new hire will also teach ethics and all-college courses. The position beings July 1, 2023 and the teaching load is 3-3. In addition to a competitive salary and benefits and generous professional travel support, the Byron K. Trippet appointment provides research support during the pre-tenure period. Our small pluralist department works actively with many campus programs including gender studies, Black Studies, PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics), Global Health, Hispanic Studies, neuroscience and more. We host an annual named lecture that the new hire can have a role in organizing.

We seek to hire someone who displays a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, an appreciation for the broad intellectual community of an excellent liberal arts college, and the ability to work with a diverse student body. The college is within 50 miles of Indianapolis, a major metropolitan area and draws on the collaborative resources of the Great Lakes Colleges Association, of which it is a member.

In the midst of a strategic transformation to advance the success of first-generation students, students of color, and students from low-income families, Wabash College is committed to attracting and effectively supporting an academically and culturally diverse faculty. More than 25% of our students are federal Pell Grant recipients, one-third of our students are first-generation college students, and about 20% of our students identify as domestic students of color. Wabash has been home to the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies for more than fifty years, is a member of the USC Race and Equity Center’s Liberal Arts Colleges Racial Equity Leadership Alliance, is a top-60 Liberal Arts College according to U.S. News, and is a member of Colleges That Change Lives.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vita, statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness, research sample, three email addresses of recommenders through which to solicit recommendations, and unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Applicants should plan to have Ph.D. in hand by start date.

Review of applications will begin on November 1. Virtual interviews will follow in December with on campus interviews in January. To apply, go to www.wabash.edu/employment and click the “Apply Now” button to upload your materials. Please direct questions about the position to Dr. Adriel Trott, Chair of the Philosophy Department, at [email protected].

Wabash College, a liberal arts college for men, seeks faculty and staff who are committed to providing quality engagement with students, high levels of academic challenge and support, and meaningful experiences that prepare students for life and leadership among diverse populations around the globe. Wabash is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from persons of all backgrounds.
