Purpose of Position

The Department of Philosophy and Religion at Christopher Newport University invites applications for the Bertram and Gladys Aaron Professorship of Jewish Studies, effective August 2023. The teaching load for this appointment is 3-3. The successful candidate for this endowed position must present a record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service that warrants an appointment with tenure at the rank of associate or full professor. A doctorate or equivalent in Religion or a closely related field is required. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.

CNU values effective teaching inspired by sound scholarship. The University seeks a passionate and engaged teacher and productive scholar who will lead the Department of Philosophy and Religion’s efforts in broadening its course offerings in Jewish Studies and in attracting more students to the Philosophy and Religion major. The successful candidate must be able to teach courses such as Hebrew Bible, Introduction to Judaism, and Religions of the West. As a specialist in Jewish Studies, the Aaron professor will serve as a scholarly resource for the University’s related programs and organizations. The successful candidate will also assume the role of academic liaison to the vibrant and active Jewish community of the Virginia peninsula.

The Department of Philosophy and Religion consists of 12 full-time faculty, each a dynamic teacher/scholar who is committed to expanding and enhancing the awareness of thought traditions across the centuries and around the world.
