Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) Department of Philosophy, Hampden-Sydney College Job category: Junior faculty / Tenure-track AOS: Open in the analytic tradition (but not early modern or philosophy of science) AOC: Professional ethics AOC categories: Applied ethics Workload: Full time Vacancies: 1 Location: Hampden-Sydney, Virginia, United States Start date: July 1, 2023 The Philosophy Department of Hampden-Sydney College seeks applicants in any field of analytic philosophy (except early modern and philosophy of science) for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. The appointment begins July 1, 2023. Information about the department can be found at https://www.hsc.edu/academics/philosophy. We seek an exceptional teacher with a demonstrated commitment to liberal-arts education and an active research agenda. Teaching load is seven courses per year; classes are typically small and taught seminar style. Successful applicants are expected to teach a course in professional ethics for the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest and should be eager to participate both in Wilson Center co-curricular programming and in the College’s Honors and Core Cultures programs. Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the date of appointment. Online applications may be submitted beginning September 1, 2022 and must include a C.V., three letters of recommendation, and a detailed and specific cover letter that (1) demonstrates the candidate’s commitment to liberal-arts education, (2) explains the candidate’s teaching philosophy and the appeal of this specific job, (3) gives evidence of teaching excellence, (4) summarizes the candidate’s research agenda, and (5) explains the candidate’s understanding of diversity and its role in the teaching of philosophy. Hampden-Sydney College is a selective liberal arts institution enrolling approximately 1000 students. Founded in 1775, it is the tenth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Our beautiful 1300-acre campus is less than 7 miles from downtown Farmville, home to Longwood University and the Moton Museum, which is listed on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.
